Which Glass Bottle Defects Are Acceptable and Which Are Not?

A glass bottle defect acceptance boundary should be built by defect type and project risk, not by a universal number copied from another order. Functional defects that affect safety, filling, sealing or use are treated very differently from small visual marks in a non-critical area. Buyers should classify defects into functional, dimensional, glass appearance, decoration and packing damage, then define the boundary against the approved sample and agreed observation conditions.

Functional Defects Come First

Defects that can cut a user, block filling, weaken the bottle or prevent closure fit should be escalated immediately. Examples include broken finish, sharp glass, serious cracks, internal glass fragments, severe deformation or a sealing surface that cannot work with the closure. These are not cosmetic debates. They threaten filling, transport or consumer use.

Dimension and Fit Defects

Some defects are visible only when the bottle is assembled. A finish can look acceptable until the cap, pump or dropper is applied. Out-of-round necks, poor thread formation, tilted finish or uneven sealing surface can create leakage, loose caps or poor shelf appearance. For bottle families with premium display needs, such as Perfume Bottles, fit defects should be reviewed together with the actual closure and shelf-facing surfaces.

Glass Appearance Defects

Small bubbles, mold seams or slight color variation may be commercially acceptable in some projects and unacceptable in others. A premium perfume bottle, pharmaceutical-looking amber bottle and low-cost promotional jar do not share the same visual standard. The buyer should define critical surfaces, viewing distance, light condition and whether filled-product appearance changes the decision.

Decoration Defects

Decoration defects include print offset, missing ink, pinholes, coating scratches, uneven spray, decal edge issues and color difference. These should be judged against the approved decorated sample, not only against the undecorated bottle. If the defect appears after packing, the buyer should review the packing for rubbing or pressure at the same defect location.

Packing Damage

Chips, cracks or rubbed surfaces may be caused by transport rather than production. That distinction matters because the corrective action is different. A manufacturing defect needs process correction; packing damage needs divider, tray, carton or pallet correction. Arrival photos should show the carton, inner protection and damaged position.

What Usually Requires Rejection

Reject or escalate defects that affect safety, sealing, filling compatibility, structural strength, legal label placement or the intended visible premium surface. Do not accept a serious neck defect because the rest of the bottle looks good. If the closure cannot work, the package cannot work.

What Needs a Project Boundary

Minor bubbles, seam visibility, slight shade variation and small marks away from the main display panel often require project-specific judgment. The buyer should not invent a universal AQL or tolerance. Instead, use retained samples, defect photos, agreed viewing conditions and the buying purpose described in the RFQ. Early specification language in the RFQ should define critical surfaces, closure fit and packing evidence before acceptance disputes appear.

Build the Boundary Before Shipment

Use Design & Development or a similar approval workflow to create a defect file before production: critical defects, acceptable visual range, decoration limits, packing damage evidence and escalation contact. A defect boundary is useful only when the buyer and supplier can apply it to real bottles, not when it remains a generic sentence in a purchase order.

Observation Conditions Matter

Acceptance boundaries become unfair when inspection conditions are not agreed. A tiny mark found with magnification may not matter on a warehouse jar, but it may matter on the front face of a luxury bottle. A bubble hidden near the base may be acceptable for one project and unacceptable for another if the base is part of the premium look. Define normal viewing distance, light, rotation and whether the bottle is filled or empty during inspection.

For decoration and appearance, use limit samples when possible. A limit sample shows the most severe condition the buyer will accept. Photos can help, but they should include scale and lighting notes. Without this context, a close-up defect photo can make a minor issue look dramatic or make a serious repeated issue look isolated.

How to Write a Project Boundary

A useful boundary names the defect group, critical area, inspection condition and required action. For example, the document may say that defects affecting sealing are escalated immediately, while small visual marks outside the front display panel are judged against the retained sample. It may say that decoration scratches on the logo panel require supplier review, while minor marks on a hidden base edge are reviewed by sample comparison. The exact language should fit the product and channel, not a copied template.

How to Use Defect Photos in Supplier Communication

Send defect photos in sets. Include one close-up, one normal-distance view, one photo showing the defect position on the bottle and one photo of the packing condition if transit damage is possible. Name the defect group in the message: functional, fit, glass appearance, decoration or packing. This helps the supplier route the issue to the right team. A neck finish problem may need engineering review; a rubbed coating may need packing review; a color issue may need decoration or glass batch review.

When the supplier responds, ask for corrective action tied to the defect group. "We will be careful" is not enough. Better responses mention fixture adjustment, packing separator change, operator instruction, sample reapproval or additional line check. The buyer does not need to dictate the factory method, but the response should make sense for the observed defect.

Defect boundaries should also define escalation timing. A critical functional problem should stop shipment discussion immediately. A visual concern may require sorting, limit-sample comparison or buyer approval before release. A packing concern may require a revised carton photo or repack plan. The response should fit the risk category.

For repeat orders, keep the defect boundary with the purchase file. If a new inspector joins the project, the boundary should still explain what was accepted previously and why. That continuity is often what prevents old defects from returning as new disputes.

The boundary should be shared with the inspection team before goods are packed. If inspectors receive only a purchase order, they may judge defects differently from the buyer who approved the sample. A short defect guide with photos, critical areas and escalation rules makes the inspection result more predictable.

When a boundary is difficult to describe, use accepted and rejected samples side by side. Physical comparison often communicates visual limits better than a paragraph of subjective adjectives, especially across languages and departments.
